Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the most streamed song within six months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music didn't just bring interest back to the genre, but also to Latin music all over the world. The Billboard Top 100 had four songs in 2016, compared to two songs in the year 2015. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017, 19 songs mainly composed in Spanish were in at the very top of 100. This figure grew to 41 by 2020. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix to Despacito (2017) well-known artists have begun collaborating with reggaeton musicians, such as Drake together with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna with Maluma on Medellin (2019). Certain reggaeton performers were unhappy about the trend toward mainstream music in 2020. A new band, Rauw alejandro, was trying to change the course. The genre often incorporated elements of various genres, as well as electronic dance.
